Aloysius Ssemaganda

Ssemaganda Aloysious holds a Bachelors degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology of Makerere University. He joined IAVI in April 2003 and is working as Laboratory technologist in the UVRI/IAVI Immunology laboratory.

Andrea Vonlieven

Andrea Vonlieven is the Feasibility Sites Coordinator and Co-Monitor. She Coordinates feasibility protocols and assists in community mobilization. She is also the trial Manager for A002 at the UVRI/IAVI office. Previously Andrea worked with PSF (Project San Francisco) in the large family planning study.

Andrew Muluubya

A holder of a Master of Science degree in Strategic Information Technology Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Quantitative Economics, together with professional certification in network technical support, computer technical support and systems administration; Andrew Muluubya is the in-charge of Data and IT management at the UVRI/IAVI Vaccine Program. Previously, he worked for the YMCA as IT manager. He also worked as an independent consultant in the areas of computer/network technical support and statistical computing.

Angelo Kaggwa

Angelo Kaggwa holds a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communication from Makerere University and joined IAVI as the Program's Documentation Officer. He is responsible for documentation, media relations, public relations, communications and development of I.E.C (Information, Education and Communication) materials. Angelo sits on the Governing Council for the Public Relations Association of Uganda (PRAU), and formerly worked as Public Relations Assistant for The Mildmay HIV/AIDS Care and Training Centre.

Ann Marie Namuniina

Annemarie Namuniina is an assistant laboratory technologist. She joined UVRI/IAVI in 2002 march holding a diploma in science laboratory techniques from Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo, currently Kyambogo University. Before joining UVRI/IAVI, she was working with UVRI clinic as a laboratory technician involved in serological tests like HIV rapid tests, ELISA, syphilis, and pregnancy tests. She also worked under STI project as a laboratory technician, collecting blood samples from the field (Nsambya Hospital) on antenatal mothers and testing the blood on HIV and syphilis.

Annet Nanvubya

Dr. Nanvubya Annet is a medical officer at UVRI/IAVI HIV Vaccine Program .She is responsible for the day today clinic activities which include; Volunteer recruitment, Screening, Enrolment and Follow up of the volunteers. She holds a Bachelors degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from Mbarara University of science and Technology. Before joining the UVRI/IAVI team, She worked as a medical officer in Buluba Hospital for 2 years where she was a physician in charge of the Medical ward and Theatre. She worked as an Intern Doctor in Mulago hospital for 1 year.

Annet Naluyiga

Annet Naluyiga is the Project Accountant at UVRI/IAVI. She's responsible for the day today processing of Financial transactions and production of periodical Financial reports. She is an ACCA Finalist and Holds a Diploma in Business studies from Makerere University Business School. Before joining IAVI, she worked with St Henry's College Masaka as the School Accountant / In charge stores and SOS Children's Villages Uganda as the Assistant Accountant.

Apolo Balyegisawa

Dr. Apolo Balyegisawa is a Clinical Study Monitor for Feasibility Sites in Uganda (Medical Research Council-Entebbe & Masaka), Zambia (ZEHRP) and South Africa (University of Cape Town-DTHF).He holds a medical degree (MBChB-MUK).Before joining UVRI/IAVI, he worked as Antiretroviral therapy Team Leader/Coordinator and co-Investigator on VCT and ART delivery trials in TASO Jinja. He also served as Medical Officer (Research Clinician) on Hormonal contraception and HIV genital shedding studies. These were collaborative studies between Makerere University and Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA

Carolyn Pool Konde

Sr. Carol Konde Pool, RN/RM is a Health Educator/Nurse/Counselor. She has a Diploma in Health Services Management at Uganda Management Institute. Before joining UVRI/IAVI, Carol worked at Joint Clinical Research Centre, Kampala as a Senior Nursing Officer on the HIV Vaccine trial, Canary pox VcP205. She also served as a Nurse/Counselor on a discordant couple study and in the preparation of vaccine trial potential volunteers (PAVE). These were collaborative projects with Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, USA. She also worked at Nsambya Missionary Hospital as a Senior Nursing Officer.

Enoch Muyanja

Enoch Muyanja holds a Bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Sience (BMLS) of Mbarara University of Science and Technology. He joined IAVI in December 2005 and is working as Laboratory technologist in theUVRI/IAVI Immunology and Safety laboratories. Previously worked with LMK Medical Laboratory and Consultancies.

Evelyn Nalwanga

Evelyn Nalwanga is the Receptionist/Secretary at the UVRI/IAVI HIV Vaccine Program. She is responsible for receiving volunteers, operating the telephone exchange, photocopying and general secretarial duties. She holds a Diploma in Business Administration and Management and a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Nkumba University. Before she joined the Trials unit, she was working with Victoria Medical Center Entebbe as a Secretary/Cashier for two years.

Harriet Nakigozi

Nakigozi Harriet is a laboratory attendant at the UVRI/IAVI HIV vaccine program. Previously, she worked with the Medical Research Council and Sexual transmitted Infections project as a laboratory attendant specializing in sample sorting, washing and sterilizing of glassware, cleaning of laboratory coats and waste disposal.

Fiona Kalinda

Dr Fiona Kalinda is the Senior Trial Physician at the UVRI/IAVI HIV vaccine program in Entebbe. She holds a Bachelors degree in Medicine and surgery ( Makerere University),Masters degree in Tropical Child Health (Liverpool U.k) ,as well as a post graduate certificate in HIV/AIDS prevention and management(University of California San Diego).Previously she worked in various capacities in the Uganda Peoples defense forces (UPDF) Medical services and Aids control program ,and before joining IAVI ,was the UPDF AIDS control program officer in charge of care and support.

Josephine Birungi

Josephine Birungi, PhD, joined the UVRI/IAVI HIV Vaccine trial unit as the Senior Scientist in April 2002. She is in charge of the clinical and immunogenicity laboratory. She holds a PhD in Molecular genetics at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark/Makerere University, Kampala. Before joining UVRI/IAVI HIV Vaccine program, she worked as a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale University School of Medicine on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded Vector genetics project. Prior to joining Yale, she was part of the core team that set up a Molecular Biology Laboratory at Makerere University, Kampala, funded by DANIDA.

Leslie Nielsen

Ms. Nielsen is the Project coordinator for the UVRI/IAVI HIV Vaccine trial program. Before coming to IAVI, she worked for Case Western Reserve University as Project Manager in Uganda for the ALVAC HIV-1 preventive vaccine trial (canarypox vCP 205, HIVNET 007) and also served as Clinical Coordinator for a large HIV prevention study (hormonal contraceptives and their effect on HIV acquisition).

Mebra Mugala

Mebra is the office assistant at the UVRI/IAVI HIV vaccine program, she assists with secretarial and reception duties, provides refreshment to volunteers and other visitors as well as maintains inventory of kitchen and sanitary supplies. Mebra holds a certificate in catering and hotel management.

Monica Balyeku

Monica Balyeku Ntende is a Nurse/Counselor; she is an Enrolled Midwife by profession, trained from Jinja school of Nursing and Midwifery. After which she trained as a counselor with The Aids Support Organization (TASO) and The Aids Information Centre (AIC).

Paul Kato

Paul Kato Kitandwe is a graduate of Makerere University, Kampala where he attained a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. He joined IAVI in March 2002 and is currently working as the senior laboratory technologist specializing in the Elispot and intracellular cytokine assay techniques.

Peter Kiwanuka

Peter Kiwanuka is the Senior Project Administrator in charge of finance and administration, procurement and general support services. He holds a BA Social Sciences degree, and a Master of Arts in Public Administration and Management of Makerere University. Before joining the UVRI/IAVI team, Peter extensively worked within the Human Resource department of the Spear Group of Companies, sole dealers in Mercedes Benz and Jeep vehicles. He also worked as a consultant in development planning, human resource management, public sector management and community participation with a number of consultancy firms on World Bank, DANIDA and KfW, IFAD and Irish AID, BSF, FAO, JICA and GoU funded projects in the fields of development planning and infrastructural development (water and sanitation, divestiture of housing estates and decentralized service delivery systems).

Pontiano Kaleebu

Pontiano Kaleebu is the Principal Investigator. He holds a Medical degree from Makerere University Medical School, Kampala, a Diploma in Immunology and a PhD from London University. He is currently the Assistant Director of Research at the Uganda Virus Research Institute and he heads the Immunology Division at the Institute. He is also the Head of the Basic Sciences of the Medical Research Council Programme on AIDS in Uganda. He holds other Institutional, National and International responsibilities. He is the Vice-chair of the UVRI science and ethics committee, a member of the Health Sciences Committee of the National Council for Science and Technology and an honorary lecturer Makerere University. He is the Chairman of the African AIDS Vaccine Programme, a board member of The South African AIDS Vaccine Initiative (SAAVI), a board member of the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC) based in New York and an honorary lecturer, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has received many awards including the Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) and Uganda National Council for Science and technology award of Young Scientist year award 1999. A vocational Award from Rotary International for scientific achievements. He has published widely with more than 30 publications and a book chapter on Immune responses to infection in the Text Book, Principles of Medicine in Africa, 3rd Edition. He was also a co-Principal Investigator for the first HIV vaccine trial in Africa, the ALVAC vCP 205.

Rose Nabatanzi

Rose Nabatanzi holds a Bachelors degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology from Makerere University. She joined IAVI in December 2005 and is working as Laboratory technologist in the UVRI/IAVI Immunology laboratory.

Sam Ddumba

Sam is the driver at the UVRI/IAVI HIV Vaccine trials program, he provides transport as well as runs errands for study related activities. He is also in charge of keeping the study vehicles in good working conditions.

Sarah Coutinho

Sarah Coutinho is a registered nurse/counselor. Before joining UVRI/IAVI HIV vaccine program, Sarah worked with Nsambya hospital homecare as counselor. She has also worked with Mulago hospital and Victoria medical center, among others.

Sigirenda Simon

Sigirenda Simon is the Senior Programs Officer. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Social Sciences from Makerere University and has additional training in Gender and Project Planning, Management, HIV/AIDS Counseling, Community Mobilisation. He is in charge of Community preparedness and stakeholder outreach, volunteer recruitment, follow up, developing community mobilization programs, Peer Leaders' capacity building, Community Advisory Board maintenance and capacity building, implementing community assessment and vaccine preparedness activities, preparing for public presentations, discussions. Previously he worked as a Project Field Officer with Slum Aid Project implementing HIV/AIDS and Gender based violence programs in Kampala.

Victoria Nakiganda

Victoria Nakiganda is a pharmacist at UVRI/IAVI Vaccine program. She is responsible for investigational/study products, involving receipt, storage, accountability and inventory. She holds a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Makerere University. Before joining UVRI/IAVI, she worked as a pharmacist with NEC Healthworld pharmaceuticals limited for one year and also with AFFORD/UHMG. Prior to that, she worked as an intern pharmacist in Mulago national referral hospital.

Winnie Ibanda Okura

Winnie is a Driver with IAVI Vaccine Program. She is a Secretary by profession and holds Pitman's Secretarial Certificates. Before joining IAVI, worked with several NGO's in Kenya, which included African Academy of Sciences (AAS), African Association of Political Scientists (AAPS) and RANDFORUM. On return to Uganda, she joined Africar Rentals (yellow taxi) as a Cab Captain.

Yvonne Collins

Yvonne Collins is a Desktop support officer at UVRI/IAVI HIV Vaccine program in Entebbe.She holds a Bachelors degree in Computer Information Systems from Grambling State University, Louisiana, (U.S.A). Previously, she worked in San Jose, CA for IBM on the E-Business Hosting operations team.
